SUMMARY:Gentle Hatha with Corinne
DESCRIPTION:8 Weeks starting Thursday\, October 18\n6:30 to 7:45 p.m. \nCost:\nCommunity League Members (any league): $80/ 8 weeks\nNon-members: $104/8 weeks \nHave you always wanted to try yoga? Are you looking for a place to learn or practice in a comfortable\, non-judgmental atmosphere and at a very reasonable price? \nJoin us for this ten-week class where yoga postures\, breath work\, and meditation will be taught to promote balance in the body\, mind and spirit. \nAll Levels welcome! Registration is required. \nLearn more about Corinne: http://www.lotusmoonyoga.ca/ \nOnline registration is required and is available below. \n\n  \nWhat others say about yoga classes with Corinne: \n“Yoga classes with Corinne changed my life! They helped to gradually increase my physical strength and to become more emotionally-centred – they showed me how to use breathing to reduce anxiety! Corinne’s classes are relaxed but professional. I have two artificial hips and she made sure that no execises put me in any danger and if there was something that was uncomfortable for me to do\, she found an alternate exercise that was comfortable. Corinne is a person who is totally at ease teaching a class no matter the age group; she is relatable on all levels and very laid-back. Her classes are your real sense of belonging to something special. She keeps it just personal enough so that everybody related to each other in a fun and positive way! In my opinion\, anybody would benefit from taking a class with Corinne.” – Agnes \n“I have practiced yoga for 15 years\, the last three under Corinne’s guidance. Her classes are welcoming\, relaxing and often humorous as Corinne offers yoga antidotes\, gentle adjustments and support. In addition to settling cranky hips\, back and neck. I love the social side of her classes which benefits both body and soul.” – Cathy \n“Corinne has been a constant nurturing presense in my yoga journey of the past seven years. Her compassion and loving-kindness creates a safe\, accepting space for her student to bring their joys and their pain to the mat. Her classes are simulataneously challenging and incredibly supportive; when I leave\, I feel reconnected with the peace and strength within myself.” – Frieda \n

SUMMARY:Yoga with Santha
DESCRIPTION:This one-hour yoga will be practised slowly and more actively to assist with the reduction of stress and improve body stability. Sitting in a chair for extended periods of time causes tight hips\, which might also impact our knees and hamstrings. Yoga helps us to work on simple dynamic movements that can be practised often to release the stress on the lower spine and minimize the knee pains\, groin pains\, etc. Yoga helps improve blood circulation which can increase energy and reduce fatigue.\nDetails:\n8 weeks\nTuesdays from 6:30-7:30pm\nOctober 16th-December 4th \nCost:\nCommunity League Members: $80\nNon-members: $110 \nPlease register below

SUMMARY:Introduction to Community Walking
DESCRIPTION:The Community League Walking Program offers a convenient\, low risk\, and affordable form of physical activity for community league members in their neighbourhoods. To grow regular and urban pole walking programs across the city\, the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL) is offering leadership training for members interested in starting or assisting with a program in their community. \nCommunity league members registered in this training session will become certified Urban Poling instructors for their community and learn about topics such as urban pole technique\, risk management\, and route planning. Members will be provided a program manual and resource guide developed by the EFCL\, intended to help leaders plan\, deliver\, evaluate\, and sustain a program in their communities. \nPlease note that you must be a current community league member to register. Spots will be prioritized for community league members who plan to lead a walking program in their community. Community league members who simply want to learn more about the walking program will only be able to attend if the session is not filled. SUMMARY:Engineering for Kids: Robotics 101 (7-14)
DESCRIPTION:Robotics 101 program is designed to introduce students to both robot building as well as programming. The students will build robots to accomplish a specific task while using their imagination to make their robot better than the basic robot. During the class\, students will discover the Engineering Design Process in a real-world setting as they test their\nrobots multiple times. \n4-week class\nSaturday\, October 6th\, 13th\, 20th and 27th \nRobotics 101 – $110 for members (any league)\, $130 for non-members\n– 14 participants max (6 required to run the class) \nPlease register below. \nProgram Details: \nRobot Intelligence–During the first lesson students will build their\nrobots. Students will also discover that robots have to be programmed and a\nrobot does not work as soon as it is built. \nArm Flexing–By the time students have reached the Arm Flexing lesson\,\nthey have a solid understanding of the mechanics of both the programming\nand build of the robots. Students will be challenged to program their robot\nto drive to a ping-pong ball and hit the ball with an arm. The students\nwill be competing against one another to get the ping-pong ball the\nfurthest. \nLine Follow–The Line Following lesson will introduce students to a new\nlight sensor and build upon what they learned in Bouncing Off the Walls.\nWith the light sensor\, their robot will be able to differentiate between\nlight and dark and navigate its way around a track. \nSumobots–The students will be challenged with building battle robots to\npush the opponent’s robot outside of the Sumo Ring. Students will need to\nuse what they learned from prior lessons to make a robot that is very\nstable\, utilizes sensors\, and maybe even an arm for flipping

Students investigate the properties of several crazy concoctions and make their own\nsamples of bubbles\, play dough\, slime\, and more. \n4-week class\nSaturday\, October 6\, 13\, 20 and 27\, 2018 \nCost:\nCommunity League Members (any league): $80\nNon-members: $100 \n12 participants max (6 minimum to run the class) \nPlease register below. \nProgram details: \nBubble Bliss– Students will explore properties of a liquid during this\nBouncing Bubbles lesson. They will experiment concocting two different\nbubble solutions to determine which one produces stronger bubbles. \nFoaming Fun – Foam can have properties of both a liquid and solid. During\nthis lesson\, students will create and investigate different solutions of\nfoam and analyze their properties. Prepare to make a mess! \nSecret Inkers – Chemical reactions are cool\, but when you have certain\nchemical reactions you can create some really mysterious designs. In this\nclass\, students explore how acids and bases react and use what they’ve\nlearned to write their own secret messages. \nPresto-Chango Dough – Students will have the opportunity to make their own\nplay dough using simple household materials. Students will learn how\ndifferent materials react chemically and how they can change the physical\nproperties of their Presto-Chango Dough! \nPlayful Polymers – In this activity\, students will be able to manipulate\nthe material properties of glue. Parents are responsible for their children at all times and must be available in the event of an emergency.\n2) Are easily identifiable by their blue shirts and name tags and may be assisted by volunteer leaders in training.\n3) Have completed a security clearance process\, are trained in first aid and are certified specialists in fun! \nProgramming is still available on rainy/snowy days but will be cancelled during severely inclement weather. \n*Flying Eagle visits various Green Shack playground program sites each week of the summer. This program uses the medicine wheel as a guiding principle and teaches children and families about the first peoples of this land and Treaty 6. Activities may include storytelling\, bead crafts\, dream catchers\, double ball\, lacrosse\, bannock making\, smudging and talking circles. \nIncorporating Indigenous teachings into community recreation helps to build a relationship of understanding and respect among the program participants. It also encourages discussions about the history of the land and celebrates the relationship among all Edmontonians today. The program leader helps create a safe space for these conversations and teachings to be shared.

SUMMARY:Help the Bees! Bee Hotel Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that much of the food that you eat owes itself to pollinators? The majority of pollinators are insects\, such as  butterflies\, moths\, flies\, beetles\, wasps\, and especially bees!\nAlberta is home to over 300 species of bees\, most of which are solitary bees: they are not aggressive and are also very efficient pollinators.\nPollinators and bees are declining for a number of reasons\, including: habitat loss\, pesticide use\, and climate change. We need solitary bees to pollinate our plants\, including our vegetable plots\, flower gardens and agricultural crops. \nYou can help Edmonton’s bees!\nJoin us for this Help the Bees: Bee Hotel Workshop  where you will create a bee hotel for your backyard from a kit provided by the Edmonton and Area Land Trust. You will also learn more about what you can do to help bees and other pollinators. Bee hotels attract tunnel-nesting\, non-aggressive solitary bees and other solitary pollinators\, which lay their eggs in the tunnels of the hotel. By placing these in your yard\, you will help to create much needed habitat and in turn\, will also be introducing more pollinators to help your flower and vegetable gardens. \nParticipants must bring their own fully-charged cordless drill (with extra battery if possible)\, and should be comfortable using it. All other tools and supplies will “bee” provided! \nThis workshop is open to adults and children aged 5+. Children 13 and under must be registered with an adult.  Maximum of two adults or one adult and two children per bee hotel kit. For families with two adults and two+ children\, two bee hotel kits will need to be purchased. \nWorkshop provided by: Edmonton and Area Land Trust\nMay 25\, 2018\n7 to 9 p.m.\nKnottwood Community Hall \nCost/Registration Info: (Per Bee Hotel Kit)\nCommunity League members (any league): $30\nNon-members: $40 \nIn order to ensure we have enough participants\, please register below by May 21. \nLearn more about bee hotels and pollinators \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPhotos courtesy of Edmonton Area Land Trust \nQuestions?\nEmail communications@knottwoodcommunity.ca \n  \n  \n\n \nLet us know what other gardening events/topics you’d like to learn about! \nThis event is being held as part of our 2018 Garden program.  If you’re interested in receiving information on other 2018 gardening events\, please register here and we will add you to our Gardening Program email list. \nBe sure to let us know what other gardening related topics you’re interested in learning about\, and we will attempt to set up workshops\, if we can. \nFollow us on Facebook and join the Knottwood Community Group for up-to-the-minute info for upcoming events. \n

Registration is required. \nLearn more about Corinne: http://www.lotusmoonyoga.ca/ \nOnline registration is required and is available below. \nFor Pay-What-You-Can options\, or any questions\, email programs@knottwoodcommunity.ca. Her classes are simulataneously challenging and incredibly supportive; when I leave\, I feel reconnected with the peace and strength within myself.” – Frieda \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Neighbourhood Watch Speaker Series: Kim Buehler
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that benches can improve safety and community in your neighbourhood? \nFor the second instalment of our Speaker Series\, we are delighted to welcome Kim Buehler\, the Executive Director of the South East Edmonton Seniors Association. She succesfully launched a bench program in her Edmonton neighbourhood and will be joining us to discuss the topic of place making\, the importance of installing benches in our communities and how we can successfully adopt an initiative in our neighbourhood. \nWhy benches? They help make a neighbourhood more walkable by providing rest stops where people can sit and meet their neighbours or relax on their own. In turn\, they encourage community building which helps reduce social isolation and loneliness\, gives peoples places to relax in their community\, and a chance to get out and see and be seen. All of these contribute to the safety of a neighbourhood. \nWe are excited to look into creating these public spaces that will help contribute to our sense of community and in turn\, people’s health\, happiness and well-being in Knottwood. Come out to learn more. \nRead more about community benches via Edmonton Journal \nRead more about the City of Edmonton’s Buddy Bench pilot \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCrime Prevention and Neighbourhood Watch Speaker Series: Kim Buehler\nTuesday\, March 27\, 2018\n7:45 to 9 pm\nKnottwood Community Hall\nCost: FREE\nThis event is open to everyone. Membership in the Knottwood Community League is not required.\n \nPlease help us keep track of our numbers by registering below.  \nQuestions? Email neighbourhoodwatch@knottwoodcommunity.ca. \nAbout Kim Buehler \nKim Buehler is the Executive Director of South East Edmonton Seniors Association. Kim has a background in team building being part of the Marching Arts community in the capacity of performer\, instructor\, mentor and judge. Kim recently initiated a community bench project to make her (and SEESA’s) Holyrood neighbourhood more walkable for seniors by giving them a place to rest. In 2016\, SEESA received the Minister’s Seniors Service Award for outstanding commitment to Alberta’s Seniors. \n\nAbout the Crime Prevention and Neighbourhood Watch Speaker Series \nJoin us on the last Tuesday of each month\, to learn different topics and strategies to reduce opportunities for crime. Guest speakers will attend and provide information and advice. Learn how to report vandalism\, graffiti\, crime and suspicious activities. Talk about your concerns regarding neighbourhood safety and have the opportunity to share your ideas to improve safety. \nLocks\, windows\, doors\, fencing\, cameras\, lighting\, and landscaping are just some of the tools we can use to reduce the attractiveness of potential crime targets. The practice of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) ensures that all spaces are defined\, properly designed\, and have a designated use. These are some of the strategies and tools we will discuss how to use to deter crime within and around properties and the community. Check back each month for our new speaker. \n  \n  \n  \n
