DESCRIPTION:Did you know that benches can improve safety and community in your neighbourhood? \nFor the second instalment of our Speaker Series\, we are delighted to welcome Kim Buehler\, the Executive Director of the South East Edmonton Seniors Association. She succesfully launched a bench program in her Edmonton neighbourhood and will be joining us to discuss the topic of place making\, the importance of installing benches in our communities and how we can successfully adopt an initiative in our neighbourhood. \nWhy benches? They help make a neighbourhood more walkable by providing rest stops where people can sit and meet their neighbours or relax on their own. In turn\, they encourage community building which helps reduce social isolation and loneliness\, gives peoples places to relax in their community\, and a chance to get out and see and be seen. All of these contribute to the safety of a neighbourhood. \nWe are excited to look into creating these public spaces that will help contribute to our sense of community and in turn\, people’s health\, happiness and well-being in Knottwood. In 2016\, SEESA received the Minister’s Seniors Service Award for outstanding commitment to Alberta’s Seniors. \n\nAbout the Crime Prevention and Neighbourhood Watch Speaker Series \nJoin us on the last Tuesday of each month\, to learn different topics and strategies to reduce opportunities for crime. Guest speakers will attend and provide information and advice. Learn how to report vandalism\, graffiti\, crime and suspicious activities. Talk about your concerns regarding neighbourhood safety and have the opportunity to share your ideas to improve safety. \nLocks\, windows\, doors\, fencing\, cameras\, lighting\, and landscaping are just some of the tools we can use to reduce the attractiveness of potential crime targets. The practice of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) ensures that all spaces are defined\, properly designed\, and have a designated use. This is the perfect way to meet\, chat\, see resumes and get to know each other…face to face. Parents will have a chance to have 5 to 10 minute “mini interviews’ with each sitter candidate to get a feel for who they are and how they might fit into their family. This is truly a cost-effective way of interviewing multiple candidates at a time versus spending hours surfing the web\, searching community job boards and setting up multiple appointments. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, February 11\, 2018\n 10 weeks\n 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. \nTeens can receive a lot of benefits from yoga. Aside from the many physical benefits\, yoga can also teach young people techniques for coping with stress and the issues they face\, such as insecurity about their changing bodies\, the pressure to fit in\, stressful school situations\, and more. \nThe program is conducted in a fun non-competitive environment focusing on equality and honouring the uniqueness of each individual. Students will learn physical and mental balance and techniques to ease stress and build confidence.  The primary focus is on body balance\, mindfulness and relaxing techniques with fun\, contemplation and commitment. Plus learning the benefits of various practices for self-regulation and personal growth. Breathing practices\, short meditations and relaxation techniques are also included. DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce our new wood sign making class! This is a twist on the traditional paint night where you choose your design\, paint it\, put on the hardware\, take it home and hang it. Enjoy a relaxing evening while painting a custom sign for your home or office or make it as a thoughtful gift for a loved one. \nHow does it work?\nYou will have 21 different sign options to choose from (see below). When registering\, indicate which sign you would like to create. When you arrive\, your chosen design and wood will be waiting for you. All you need to do is choose your stain/paint colours from the selection. You will be instructed on how to do the rest! \n\nWhat if I’m not creative?\nDon’t worry! This is not ‘free-hand’ painting\, so painters do not need to be creative but if you are a bit more artistic\, feel free to add your own special touches. \nCost:\nCommunity League Members: $35\nNon-members: $45 \nFor ages 13 years old and up \nTo register:\nRegister below. DESCRIPTION:Ekota\, Menisa and Satoo: Show off your houses for the holidays! \nDo you love to decorate the exterior of your home for the holidays? Or have a neighbour who’s light display is something to be seen? Then we invite you to take part in Knottwood’s first annual Holiday Light Contest. \nHow it works \nSend us a photo or your house or nominate your neighbour. Pictures will be posted to our Knottwood Community League Facebook page where our followers will vote. \nThe top three houses with the most likes or hearts will win some Knottwood swag\, including a community league membership (which gets you access to free swimming\, skating and more)\, free movie tickets and passes to popular City of Edmonton attractions. The winning homes will also be featured in the January issue of Knottwood News. \nAny Knottwood folks who nominate their neighbours\, will also have a chance to win one of three prize packs. \nCheck out the homes that have entered to date \nPlease help us spread the word! \nThe contest runs November 27 to December 30. There will be cardio and weight training involved using various tools such as TRX\, Battle Ropes\, Sandbags\, kettle bells and free weights. \nNEW! Deidre’s fall challenge: Win six free 1-on-1 personal training sessions ($300 value). Take part in fitness evaluations (squat test\, wall sit test\, v-sit hold and cardio element) before\, during and at the end of the 8-week program.
