Volunteer Board Profile: Kimberly Shaw

Knottwood Board Profile: Kimberly Shaw.

Kimberly truly believes in the importance of community leagues and bringing people together. After moving back to the neighbourhood she grew up in and with other young families coming back to Knottwood, she made a point of supporting the Community League by volunteering for various programs and events.  The Board of the day saw the passion, value and excitement she possessed and asked her to join.Since this time, Kimberly has held the positions of Programs Director and Neighbourhood Watch Director. She has played an enormous role in our progress towards the build of a new Community League Centre, which is critical for the advancement of our community revitalization and for bringing the community together. She led us through an entire rebrand of the League, including a  new website and Facebook Page; has recruited members onto the Board that have provided tremendous value to our needs; has helped revise our vision and mandate for the services we provide the community; and continues to be an integral part in the creation of numerous programs related to educational and activity-based care for children and neighbourhood safety.

Her focus on crime prevention has brought on many successful initiatives like our Community Safety Day, our new Community Bench Program, and our encouragement and sponsorship of block parties and the Crime Prevention Speaker Series.

Her lighter side has reinvigorated our ideas for events and programs such as providing classes in Engineering for Kids, Lego build training, paint and terrarium night. She is always supportive and at the forefront when it comes to organizing our yearly events like Community League Day and our Santa Brunch.

Kimberly’s leadership, guidance, creation of new programs/events, and dedication to what the League stands for has kept the Board fresh and enthusiastic.  With her on the Board and in her representation of the Board, we are continually progressing in our engagement and in making Knottwood a safe and sought after neighbourhood to be a part of. We are extremely fortunate to have her continued support.

Name: Kimberly Shaw
Position on the Board: Programs and Neighbourhood Watch Director
Family demographic: Married with an 8-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter, 1 dog and 2 cats.

How long have you been a resident of Knottwood?
I grew up in Satoo and Knottwood has been home for over 35 years. In 2007, my husband and I moved back to Knottwood and purchased my family home. We’ve spent the last many years renovating our house to make it our own.

Why do you choose to volunteer and why do you dedicate your time to us?
I truly love this community. About 5 years ago — after attending and volunteering at a few events — I was asked if I would be interested in filling a position on the board (I don’t remember saying yes, haha). This has been a great experience and the relationships that have been created are lifelong. Getting to know your neighbours and community members is one of the best forms of crime prevention, which is something I am very passionate about.

What is your favourite part of living in Knottwood?
So many things about Knottwood make it a great place to live. The walking paths, schools, parks, programs and the huge trees. I love that my kids are attending the same schools I did and that we’re creating awesome memories in the same community my childhood memories were created.

What do you do as a career?
I work for the Government of Alberta as a Corporate Security Advisor. I feel fortunate that I get paid to do what I love!

What do you like to do for fun?
I love making things using different mediums. Whether I’m working with wood, paper, fabric, paint, etc I enjoy coming up with new ideas.
